Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck is set to miss the club’s pre-season Barclays Asia Trophy tour in Singapore next week through a setback from the knee injury he picked up in the final weeks of last season.
His participation in the opening game of the new season against West Ham is now in doubt.
According to Wenger on the club’s website, Welbeck who has been out of action since April won’t join up with the squad for the tour.
“Welbeck isn’t completely recovered from the problem he had at the end of last season, he is not back in full training so he will stay behind.”
This report would come as a huge blow to the player and manager who would have seen the pre-season as a means to bring him to full fitness ahead of the new season.
The former United striker had a decent first season at Arsenal, and was curtailed by some injuries with his last match being on April 26 against Chelsea.
With the number of setbacks he has had since then, there is fear he might not be fit in time for the start of the season.
Wenger would be hoping he returns to fitness in time to feature in the Emirates Cup later this month in preparation for the new season.
The squad which includes new signing Petr Cech and youngster Jeff Reine-Adelaide, will be without Welbeck and Tomas Rosicky through injuries and Sanchez, Ospina and Serge Gnabry who are on holiday; and will have only Giroud, Walcott and youngsters Akpom and Alex Iwobi as strikers.
