Former Arsenal player Daniel Karbassiyoon has revealed he was the one who first noticed Arsenal star Joel Campbell, via Squawka.
The Ex-Gunner now turned scout was forced to end his playing career at the age of 22 due to persistent injuries. However, his passion for football made Arsene Wenger and the club to offer him a role in the club’s scouting team.
Daniel Karbassiyoon has now revealed how he helped the club sign Campbell in 2011 after watching the winger play for Costa Rica U20’s.
“I really liked him,” Karbassiyoon told The Independent. “His directness really impressed me, when he gets the ball he’s super-confident, goes towards goal and wants to shoot. He had that raw ability, and I was excited about getting him to Wenger to fine-tune and polish it.”
However, Wenger completed the signing of the youngster for £750,000 but the player had to wait until October last year to make his competitive debut for Arsenal due to the club’s inability to secure a work permit.
However, it was not until 2014 before the player made a name for himself, his superb performances for Costa Rica in the 2014 world cup got fans singing his name. Since making his debut for Arsenal in 2014, Campbell has impressed scoring a goal on his debut.
“I’m really pleased now to see him have a good run of games, scoring some good goals and making them,” he added.
Campbell has 3 goals in 20 appearances for the Gunners since making his full debut.
