Arsenal and Manchester United are set to go head to head in the race to sign Benfica sensation Renato Sanches, according to the Sun.

The midfielder is currently experiencing a break through season at his boyhood club Benfica and is now attracting the interest of Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United.

The midfielder has been heavily tipped to move to Manchester United this summer after the Red Devils scouts watched him in action. The Red Devils scouts were impressed with what they saw from the midfielder and previous reports even claimed Louis Van Gaal’s men are prepared to pay as much as £40m for the 18-year old’s services.

But according to the Sun, the midfielder may be tempted to consider offers from other clubs as Manchester United are on the verge of missing out on Champions League football.

Arsenal sent scouts to watch the midfielder in action last weekend when Benfica defeated Academica 2-1. It is believed that the Gunners scouts were impressed with the midfielder’s man of the match performance.

Sanches who is a box to box midfielder by trade reportedly has a £60m release clause in his contract with Benfica that won’t expire until 2021.

Arsene Wenger is reportedly interested in Bolstering his midfield options ahead of next season and will likely recruit top midfielders. Should Wenger see Sanches as his man, the club may have to offer a huge sum of money to convince Benfica to sell their prized asset.

The midfielder has scored two goals in 17 appearances for Benfica in his first season in the first team and definitely looks like a player with an enormous potential but if he will be able to hit the ground running should he move to the Emirates is another question.
