Arsene Wenger has slammed fans calling for him to be sacked after the club missed the chance to end its long wait for a league title.
The Gunners are set to end this season without the Premier League title which would make it the 12th in a row and the French man has been criticized for the club’s failings. However, Wenger has taken a swipe at those fans against him claiming it is unfair to criticize him for not winning the league when the club had to pay for the Emirates stadium.
Wenger revealed the club had to sell its best players to raise funds to pay for the Stadium and despite that limitation compared to his rivals, he rejected a number of big clubs to stay with the Gunners.
Wenger said: “When we built the stadium the banks demanded that I signed for five years
“Do you want me to tell you how many clubs I turned down during that period?
“The banks wanted the technical consistency to guarantee that we have a chance to pay back. I did commit and I stayed and under very difficult circumstances.
“So, for me, to come back today and, on top of that, be reproached for not having won the championship during that period, I think it is a bit overboard.
“I accept criticism. We had to sell our best players every year to survive.”
Wenger has been criticized heavily this season for failing to win the league title in a season where the traditional big teams have flopped with some Gunners fans staging a protest carrying a ‘Time for change’ printouts in the 12th minute of the game against Norwich on Saturday marking the 12th year without a league title at the club.
