Arsenal could follow up the signing of Granit Xhaka with a move for Argentine youngster Maxi Romero, according to reports.
Maxi Romero, 17, plies his trade for Argentine club Velez Sarzfield and Wenger is seriously weighing up a move to bring the talented youngster to the Emirates one year after his initial attempt.
The 17 year old is being dubbed the “new messi” in Argentina because of his superb dribbling skills and his ability to score goals like the Barcelona super star.
The forward caught the attention of Gunners scouts last year and Wenger has been keeping tabs on the midfielder ever since.
He was close to completing a move to Arsenal last summer but suffered a knee ligament injury in the process which forced the Gunners to pull out of the deal.
According to the Mirror via the Express, Wenger is interested in signing the forward again this summer and is prepared to pay as much as £4.5m for the forward’s services.
The forward has played just 169 minutes of competitive football this season since returning from his injury but Wenger believes so much in the player’s potential.
However, should Wenger firm up his interest for the 17 year old, he is expected to remain in Argentina as FIFA rule prevents clubs from signing players less than 18 years from non-EU countries.
Wenger is seriously keen on safeguarding the club’s future and is said to be keeping close tabs on some of the brightest prospects in England and world football at large.
