Arsene Wenger has revealed why he passed up the opportunity of signing West Ham star Dmitri Payet, via the Express.
Payet who joined West Ham from Marseille at the beginning of last season became one of the best players in the Premier League in his first season. Wenger who is known for having a strong scouting network in the French league has been questioned on how he missed out on Payet before his switch to West Ham. And Wenger has now revealed he considered signing the 29 year old at a time but opted against the move because the player was not consistent enough.
Wenger said: “Yes. Often. Very often, I have to say that I asked myself that question during my career.
“And I also have to say that I decided against it because he was not consistent. I have never doubted that he had enough talent to play in my team.
“I have been lucky enough in my club to always have very good players in his position and it was crowded!”
West Ham took the gamble and Payet has repayed the East London side’s faith in him with consistent game winning performances and his value has increased with his agent claiming it would take ridiculous amount of money to sign the player.
“As far as I am concerned, he’s been happy at West Ham and it’s down to West Ham that he’s in the position that he is in.
“He’s doing great now for France and to get him now, you’ve got to be talking ridiculous money. But football is football, so you never know. When he first came last year, we hoped for the best with him.
“We knew that he was a really good player, but I don’t think anyone could really expect what he has gone on to do in the Premier League so far.
“The game against Romania the other night was a joy to watch.”
The player has not been short of admirers as Chelsea and Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the West Ham star.
