Arsenal are set to face competition from Napoli in the race to sign Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi.
The striker is being linked with a move to the Emirates and reports claimed the player’s representative held a meeting with the Gunners last week. However, the Gunners have been dealt a huge blow as Napoli have joined the race to sign Icardi. Napoli are on the verge of selling Gonzalo Higuain to Juventus and have earmarked Icardi as a replacement.
According to Gazetta Dello Sport via the Daily Star, the Serie A club has opened talks with Inter Milan over signing the striker.
The report claims Napoli have offered to pay £33m upfront but Inter are holding out for as much as £42m.
The striker still has three years left in his contract at the San Siro and it is believed Inter are not under any pressure to sell.
Icardi has always stated he is happy at the San Siro but his agent has claimed he is open to a move away from the club.
The striker is believed to be one of Wenger’s target this summer as the French tactician attempts to sign a striker to compete with Olivier Giroud. Wenger would now have to fight off competition from Napoli if he is to sign the striker. Icardi scored 16 goals in 33 appearances for Inter last season and would be a quality addition to any squad.
