Arsenal Legend Martin Keown has hailed the quality of Rob Holding but fears Calum Chamber’s future at the Emirates could be in doubt as a result of Holding’s performances.
After joining Arsenal in the summer, Holding was immediately thrown into the first team and has impressed both fans and pundits. The defender who joined from Bolton started the Gunners first league game alongside Chambers and while he kept his place for the next two games, Chambers was dropped and subsequently loaned out to Middlesbrough.
And Keown believes Chamber’s loan to Middlesbrough could mean he does not have a future at the Emirates.
“Holding looks like a good acquisition because they’ve only paid £2.5m for him and he looks solid,” Keown told FourFourTwo .
“But I just feel that when you’re a central defender in that position, it’s like goalkeepers – do we play young goalkeepers, do we play young central defenders?
“As soon as it goes wrong there’s suddenly a lot of pressure being put on those individuals.
“Holding handled it well in the first match, thrown in at the deep end.
“You expect Chambers to have coped better because he’d been around longer, and maybe that’s why they’ve shipped him out. Maybe they feel he hasn’t developed.”
Chambers joined Arsenal from Southampton for £16m in 2014 but has struggled to break into the first team.
