Wenger believes Calum Chambers still has a future at the Emirates despite losing his place in the team.

Chambers was pushed down the pecking order at the Emirates by the arrival of Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding. He subsequently joined Middlesbrough on loan and many believe the loan move signals the end of the defender’s future at the Emirates.

However, Wenger doesn’t think that way, he believes the defender could still play a role in Arsenal’s team in the future. According to Talksport via HITC Sport, Wenger has reassured the 21-year-old that his future is at the Emirates and he is part of his long term plans.

Chambers has struggled to show his quality at Arsenal since he completed a £16m move to the club from Southampton in 2014.

He started the opening game of this season alongside new signing Rob Holding but lost his place in the next game and subsequently joined Boro on loan.

Wenger believes the move to Teeside doesn’t spell the end of the defender’s future at Arsenal but will give him the opportunity to develop into a top defender for the club.

“He has gone to Middlesbrough for the season and it is vital for him to play. I personally think he will be a great centre back.” the Frenchman said.

Chambers showed great potential when he was at Southampton which prompted Wenger to sign him. He was one of the Saints best defenders and should he begin to show that kind of quality at Middlesbrough, then he could have a chance of becoming a regular at Arsenal in the future.
