AS Roma’s Kostas Manolas is being linked to our dear club once again.
The towering centre half has been consistently linked with a move to the Emirates in the last three summers but a move is yet to come into fruition. Wenger is reportedly a big admirer of the 25 year old and tried to bring him to the Emirates from Olympiakos in 2014. We were close to agreeing an £8m move with Olympiakos only to be gazumped by an AS Roma side that had so much money after selling Medhi Benatia to Bayern Munich for a huge fee. That’s the closest we have been till date as regards signing the defender. We reportedly tried to sign him again in the summer but Roma dismissed our enquiry out of hand.
Apparently, that hasn’t deterred Wenger as he still maintains an interest in the defender. According to Spanish Publication Sport via the Daily Star, Manolas is the first name on Wenger’s list to replace Mertesacker if the German leaves the club this summer.
Mertesacker’s future at Arsenal is currently unclear and the 32 year old has already hinted at a possible move away from the Emirates.
The report also claimed we would face competition from Barcelona who are also interested in the Greek international.
Manolas is a quality defender who would strengthen our squad but we would like to think his boat has sailed long ago.
The arrival of Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding means we have enough both in quality and numbers in defense for the next few years. Holding can readily take up Mertesacker’s place next season, so we don’t see any reason to spend huge cash on the same position.
