Our hope of keeping Mesut Ozil is tied to Arsene Wenger staying at the club, reports have claimed.
Wenger and Ozil are into the dying stages of their contracts with us and there have been talks in recent weeks about their futures. We are already in negotiations with the German midfielder who is in the penultimate year of his contract to extend his deal with us but much progress has not been made.
It was claimed a few weeks ago that he is demanding a new salary package of about £250,000 a week and also wants the club to show its ambition to challenge for titles. But leading football tabloid Goal via The Express has now revealed the midfielder’s demands are not financially motivated.
The report claims Ozil’s concerns are about Wenger. The boss is in the final year of his contract and is yet to decide whether he will sign a new deal with us or not. Some reports claim he could step down at the end of the season should the club fail to win the Premier League title again and that could be bad news for us.
If Goal’s report is true, then we have to focus on keeping Wenger with us longer than his current deal. Should Wenger’s departure trigger Ozil’s exit, then it would also result in exodus of other important players like Sanchez and Bellerin. It is imperative we keep our best players even if that means keeping our manager.
Ozil joined us from Real Madrid in 2013 for a club record fee of £42.5m and has become one of our most important players.
