According to a report in the Daily Star, Real Madrid were interested in signing Arsene Wenger last season as a replacement for Zinedine Zidane.

Zidane was appointed by Real Madrid in January after they sacked Rafael Benitez but the Spanish club were unsure of the French man’s managerial quality and had lined up Wenger as a possible replacement.

Prior to taking over as Real Madrid boss, Zidane didn’t have any experience at the top level, having begun his managerial career with Real Madrid’s B team and that was where he was until Benitez’s dismissal. The Real Madrid chiefs made Wenger a plan B if Zidane failed and they initiated contact with the French man.

However, Zidane went ahead to win the Champions League within six months, which meant Madrid didn’t have to follow up their interest in Wenger.

I’m sure Wenger must have given consideration to Madrid’s interest at that time because it was the period where he was under pressure at Arsenal. The team had fallen behind Leicester City in the title race and some fans had turned against the boss, to the extent they even staged a protest against him in the game vs Norwich.

The interest could be a major reason the French man wants to wait until the end of this season before making a decision on his Arsenal future, knowing he won’t be short of offers if he decides to quit.

Obviously, he is waiting to see the fans reaction if he fails to win the title again this season but all seems to be well at the moment as we have started well this year and the French man is on course to guide us to the league title.
