Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal were interested in signing Lukaku before he joined Chelsea in 2011.
Lukaku joined Chelsea in the summer of 2011 after an impressive start to his career at Anderlecht which saw him score 33 goals in 73 games as a teenager.
He joined the West London side for £17m and although he failed to make the grade there, he has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s best strikers.
And Wenger has now revealed he was interested in signing the striker from Anderlecht but his move to Chelsea ended our hopes of bringing him to the Emirates.
“I knew him when he played in Belgium for Anderlecht,” he said.
“He came very early for Chelsea, after that, when a player is at a big London club it’s difficult to get him.”
What a signing Lukaku would have been for Arsenal had Wenger managed to secure his services. The Belgian is regarded as one of football’s most talented young striker and is on course to become a great one if he continues to improve the way he is doing.
At just 23, he has scored over a 100 career league goals and is the Belgium national team’s first choice striker, a testament of how talented the young man is.
Wenger is apparently still keeping an eye on his development. In the last transfer window, some reports linked us with a move for the striker but he opted to stay at Everton.
We never know. In football, anything is possible, the Belgian might still end up donning the Arsenal shirt in the future.
