Aston Villa are closing in on the services of Carl Jenkinson, according to reports.
Last week, it was reported that Villa had opened talks with Arsenal over signing Jenkinson after manager Steve Bruce earmarked the defender as his primary target this January transfer window.
London rivals West Ham were also said to be in the race to sign the defender but it appears it is Villa who are leading the race for his signature.
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa could sign Jenkinson on loan next month with the option of a permanent deal in the summer transfer window.
The report claims Arsenal are willing to send the midfielder out on loan next month with a view to a permanent deal in the summer and Villa are now hopeful they will reach an agreement to sign the defender despite interest from the Premier League in the defender.
Debuchy’s exit next summer will mark the end of a five-year spell at Arsenal. The defender joined from Charlton Athletic in 2011 but has failed to develop into a top player at the Emirates. He has been overtaken by both Hector Bellerin and Mathieu Debuchy in Wenger’s pecking order and his long-term future at the club is looking bleak.
A move away from Arsenal will give Jenkinson the opportunity to relaunch his career, at 24, he still has so many years ahead of him and could still be a top player but his chances of doing that at Arsenal is very slim due to quality competition for places.
