Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Standard Liege goalkeeper Guillaume Hubert, having watched the youngster in action on six occasions this season.
It could be surprising to some that Arsenal are being linked with a goalkeeper despite the likes of Petr Cech, David Ospina, Emiliano Martinez and Wojciech Szczesny on the club’s books. With Cech turning 35 at the end of the season, Arsene Wenger appears to be interested in signing a young goalkeeper who will learn from and succeed the Czech Republic man when he retires.
In recent weeks, Arsenal have been linked with AZ Alkmaar Jasper Schendelaar and Fiortentina’s Giacomo Satalino both of whom are also young goalkeepers. But Belgium news outlet, HLN via HITC Sport say Arsene Wenger is also keen on Hubert.
Hubert’s contract at Standard Liege expires at the end of the season and Arsenal could try to sign him for a cut-price fee next month or reach a pre-contract agreement with the player which will see him join us for free next summer.
Should Hubert move to the Emirates, he is unlikely to command a place in the first team and could be sent out on loan to continue his development. However, I think Hubert will be the perfect replacement for Cech considering his age. The Belgium international is just 22 and should he possess the right quality to play at the top level, he will be the ideal successor to Cech.
