Football pundit Paul Mariner has urged Arsene Wenger to spend big on signing a striker.
Arsene Wenger has managed to get the best out of Alexis Sanchez this season after converting the winger to an out and out centre-forward and while many has hailed Wenger for that masterstroke, Mariner reckons that was not the best move.
The Chile international is currently Arsenal’s top scorer having netted 12 league goals this campaign but Mariner believes Arsenal would have done better by signing a quality traditional centre-forward in the summer.
Arsenal do not lack options in the centre-forward position with Wenger having Sanchez, Olivier Giroud, Lucas Perez and the returning Danny Welbeck at his disposal but the pundit reckons that a top quality striker will push us closer to winning the league title.
Mariner told ESPN, as quoted by Squawka, when asked where Arsenal needed to strengthen their squad: “I asked him to sign a centre-defender.
Mustafi is okay. He’s not top drawer but he seems to have a good partnership with Koscielny.
“The thing that sticks in my craw is the centre-forward. He should have spent massive on a centre-forward.
“So then Ozil plays in the 10, Sanchez plays as the No.7 or the No.11, and everything is rosy in the garden and they go and win stuff. It’s the missing piece.”
I do not think Wenger would listen to Mariner’s advice because we are likely to stick with our current options. The boss has already hinted that there will be no new arrival in January, in order words ruling out the possibility of signing a top class striker next month.
