Arsenal are lining up a shock January bid to sign Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, according to Standard Sport.
Arsene Wenger is already planning for the future despite his own long-term future unresolved and is looking for a successor to Petr Cech.
Cech turns 35 next May and obviously, he is getting closer to the end of his career and Wenger is keen to secure a successor to the Czech Republic man.
They say once beaten twice shy and this is the case here as if you can recall, Wenger found it difficult to find a replacement for Jens Lehman when the former Germany international left Arsenal and the boss is keen to avoid such situation when the Cech decides to hang his gloves.
According to the report, Arsenal have made enquiries about the possibility of signing Pickford in January.
Arsenal are prepared to let the 22-year-old goalkeeper remain at Sunderland on loan until the end of the season in a bid to convince the black cats to part with their prized asset.
Sunderland are believed to be in no hurry to sell the goalkeeper considering they recently extended his contract until 2020 but should they be forced into doing any deal, they are expected to demand a huge fee for his services.
It is not also going to be an easy deal for Arsenal to complete because top Premier League clubs like Manchester City, Tottenham and Everton are also keen on the young man and are expected to join the race for his services.
Pickford has established himself as one of the league’s best goalies this season and was recently called up to the England national team, so I am not surprised he is being considered to replace Cech.
Obviously, this will be a difficult deal to complete but will be a good one if we are able to make it happen. Cech is still determined to play for many more years and it is unlikely Pickford will want to move to the Emirates to sit on the bench.
However, I will advise we go all out to sign Pickford and utilize the loan system for a few more years until Cech retires so as to ensure a smooth transition just like Chelsea did with Courtois.
