Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes Granit Xhaka has not made enough impact at Arsenal, following his big money move from Borussia Monchengladbach this last summer.
The Switzerland midfielder joined Arsenal for about £35m in May and was expected to play a key role in Arsenal’s team this season.
However, he has been unable to cement a place in the first team and was in and out of the squad until injuries to Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey gave him the chance to get an extended run in the starting xi.
And Wright believes the midfielder hasn’t shaken up the dressing room as expected since he completed a big money move to the Emirates last summer.
Speaking to the BBC over the festive period, Wright had his say on Xhaka’s impact at Arsenal and this was what the former striker had to say.
“Arsene Wenger has been very sparing with him so early. People watched him in the Euros and they wanted to see what he is capable of,” Wright said.
“He has been in and out of the team. He hasn’t really stayed in there. He has played the last few games and obviously Arsenal haven’t played particualrly well. He is the last one in and he is getting a lot of stick.
“It isn’t really happening for him yet. He is a top player. I’m not sure what kind of effect he is having. He is another player who has just fit into a nice dressing room and everyone is mates and no-one is digging the players out.”
It’s difficult not to agree with Wright. Personally, I expected more from Xhaka considering the hype that surrounded his signing and I must say I haven’t been impressed. Although, I can’t say I have disappointed either, I think Xhaka ought to have done better considering the money we spent to bring him here.
