Arsene Wenger has ruled out signing a defender in the winter transfer window, in turn putting an end to rumours linking Arsenal with Dutch full back Rick Karsdorp.

Karsdorp who has been impressive for Feyenoord this season has been linked with a January switch to the Emirates in recent weeks. It was thought Wenger was preparing a January bid for Karsdorp in a bid to strengthen the right side of his defense but the manager has played down those reports.

Speaking on his January transfer plans, Wenger ruled out a move for Karsdorp, insisting he is not looing to sign a defender next month.

“No, at present we are not looking for defenders,” Wenger said, as quoted by Dailycannon.com.

“Your information is not quite right. Do I know who Rick Karsdorp is?

Yes, he is definitely a good player, but we now find ourselves not on the transfer market. We are more focused on winning the next game.”

One can understand why Arsenal are being linked with Karsdorp. Two of the club’s right backs Carl Jenkinson and Mathieu Debuchy are being linked with moves away from the Emirates which would leave Bellerin as our only natural right back.

However, Wenger has used Gabriel Paulista in that position this season and the centre-back did well. Although Gabriel doesn’t have the qualities of a natural full back, I think he will do well in that position if need be during the course of the season.

What’s now clear is that Karsdorp will not be moving to the Emirates in January.
