Arsenal veterans Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker are set to sign new deals with the club, according to reports.
The duo’s contract expires at the end of the season and it was thought that their time at the club was up but that appears not to be the case as they are set to sign a new contract.
According to The Mirror via The Daily Star, Arsenal are ready to trigger extension in the contracts of Mertesacker and Cazorla.
There is a clause in both players current contract which allows the club to offer them one year extension each.
And Arsenal are now set to trigger the clause despite both players yet to feature well for the club this season.
Mertesacker hasn’t played at all this season since he sustained a knee injury in preseason but he is set to return to action before the end of January.
Cazorla has also missed the last two months due to injuries and he is not expected to return until March. But Wenger is keen to keep the duo and believe they can still contribute to the success of the club.
Both players will now provide experience and leadership within the squad.
Although Mertesacker is not expected to play a key part in our starting xi due to the strong Koscielny-Mustafi partnership but Cazorla is expected to move into the starting xi upon his return to fitness.
