Summer signing Shkodran Mustafi has revealed that Arsene Wenger played a crucial role in his decision to join Arsenal.
The Germany international arrived from Valencia late in August after several weeks of negotiations. Talks to bring the player to the Emirates took a couple of weeks and at some point, it was thought that a deal would not be completed before transfer deadline but Mustafi has revealed it was Wenger’s presence that helped him make the decision to join us.
The German said the managerial stability at the Emirates was something he considered before deciding to leave Valencia.
With Wenger’s long term future now uncertain, the German says he wants the boss to sign a new contract and stay in charge of the club beyond the current campaign.
Mustafi told Goal as quoted by the Express: “Sometimes you don’t know how good a coach is if you’re not training him with day in, day out.
“Him being the boss of Arsenal was important in the fact that I knew he’s been here a long time and there’s a structure.
“Playing for Valencia and Sampdoria every 12 months I had a new coach and that’s difficult because every time, new coach, different idea, different kind of football.
“Coming here with a coach whose here 20 years I knew I could come here, fit in and be part of it which makes everything much easier to play.
“I hope he’s not leaving but he has to make that decision and we will see.”
Mustafi has established himself as a key player in our squad and has shored up our defense which was in shambles last season.
