Barcelona midfielder Sergi Samper has revealed he snubbed a move to Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
The highly rated La Masia product is currently on loan at Granada but could have been plying his trade at the Emirates had he chose to listen to Arsene Wenger.
According to the player, Wenger approached him over the possibility of moving to the Emirates on a permanent deal but he felt a temporary move away from Barcelona where he would play regularly was what he wanted as it will still afford him the opportunity of coming back to Barcelona to fulfill his dream of playing making it at the Spanish club.
“I did not want to listen to Wenger,” Samper told Granada’s official website, as quoted by Tribal Football.
“I told him clearly that I wanted to stay, I wanted to succeed at Barcelona, and what would make me happy was succeeding at Barcelona in the future.”
Samper added: “I feel important in the team. I am enjoying where I am and I hope that we can change the situation.”
I guess i’m not the only one happy that Samper didn’t consider a move to Arsenal when Wenger approached him.
Obviously, the young man is very talented for Wenger to be interested in signing him but since his dream is to make it at Barcelona, staying away from Arsenal was the best decision for him.
As much as I want talented players in our squad, avoiding a future recurrence of the Fabregas-Barcelona saga is very important. It would be difficult for Samper to say no to the Spanish club after making it big here. We don’t need that kind of player.
