Arsenal are set to miss out on one of its long-time target Kostas Manolas, according to reports.
Wenger first tried to sign Manolas in 2014 but lost out to AS Roma. Last summer, when we were actively in search of a centre back, Manolas was linked with a move to the Emirates again but Roma weren’t interested in selling. The player’s agent recently claimed the Italian giants rejected a €40m bid from us last summer as they wanted a lot more if they were to part with the Greek international.
However just six months later, the player is closing in on a move to another Serie A side.
According to Calcio Mercato via Gunnersphere.com, Inter Milan have agreed a £36.3m deal with Roma to sign the defender but the player will remain at Roma until the end of the season.
Recently, Arsenal were rumored to be keeping an eye on the defender as a replacement to Per Mertesacker but it appears we no longer have any interest in Greek international after Mertesacker signed a new one year deal at the Emirates.
Considering the fee Inter payed to sign Manolas, I think it was a wise decision for Wenger to abandon his pursuit of the midfielder. The Koscielny-Mustafi partnership has proven to be a solid one this season and will only get betthe with time. Mertesacker and Gabriel are quality back up options for that position, hence there was really no need to sign Manolas and it would have been even more stupid to spend huge cash on him.
