Arsenal legend, turned-pundit Martin Keown is adamant that Xhaka needs to be shown the art of tackling by Arsene Wenger or else his Emirates career won’t last too long.
Wenger has vented out his anger at Granit Xhaka as he believes the Swiss international is ‘punishing’ Arsenal with his lack of control after receiving a red card in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Burnley.
This will be the 24-year-old’s second red card having joined us in summer and his seventh in the last two years for both club and country.
Xhaka, was sent off in the 65th minute of the game forcing the Gunners to play with 10 men after a two-footed challenge in Steven Defour.
“With both of his red cards for Arsenal this season, Xhaka cleaned out his opponent with no chance of winning the ball,” Keown told theDaily Mail.
“The 24-year-old needs to eradicate that mentality from his game. If you go in with both feet, you are off the pitch.
“He must also practise one-v-one situations with players running at him in training so he can learn how to slow them down before tackling them.
“With some players there can be an element of laziness. It is much easier to tackle straight away rather than running 20, 30 yards before making the challenge.
“Xhaka cannot go on like this. He needs to get out of the habit of trying to win the ball straight away.
“If he keeps getting sent off then it will only shorten his stay at Arsenal.”
