Former Arsenal star Martin Keown has laid Mesut Ozil for his anonymous performance against Chelsea on Saturday and also for ignoring calls from Alexis Sanchez to put in more effort to the game.
Ozil was signed in 2013 for a club record fee of 42million pounds and has often come under heavy scrutiny when he goes missing in big games.
The German international is yet to renew his contract at Arsenal and Keown agrees Ozil can become an expensive Luxury in difficult matches.
‘After Saturday’s defeat by Chelsea, it was interesting that Wenger said that senior players did not perform,’ Keown said.
‘That is really unusual for Sanchez but Ozil becomes an expensive luxury when you are out of possession. Ozil does not know his role when Arsenal do not have the ball and it is the responsibility of the manager to tell him.
‘You don’t know when he is coming or going. We saw it against Chelsea – Sanchez is saying, “Come on” but Ozil does not really want to go and press.’
