Charlie Nicholas: Vent His Frustration At Arsene Wenger For Failing To Do this

Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has slammed Arsene Wenger for his failure to take advantage of the January transfer window.

The winter window was a quiet one at the Emirates with Cohen Bramall the only arrival from Non-league side Hednesford Town.

Following the 2-1 defeat to Watford on Tuesday, fans are beginning to wonder why Wenger didn’t use the winter transfer window to strengthen our squad and ex-Gunner Charlie Nicholas has revealed he was also ‘disappointed’ by Arsenal’s lack of activity in the January transfer window,  according to the Metro.

However, Nicholas isn’t one of those unhappy that Wenger didn’t make new signings but he isn’t pleased with Arsenal’s inability to sell Carl Jenkinson and Mathieu Debuchy both of whom appear to have fallen out of the boss’ plan. The former midfielder believes the money gotten from the duo would have enable Arsenal to put more money into the contract renewals of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.

‘Should they [Arsenal] have done more? Yes, Nicholas told Sky Sport, as quoted by The Metro.

‘The loans all make sense but I’d have liked to have seen a couple of sales – Carl Jenkinson, Mathieu Debuchy, for example.

‘That money could have gone towards what for me would have been two of the biggest deals this window: new contracts for Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.’

‘The greatest statement Arsenal could have made would have been to retain those two players and I’m disappointed they haven’t,’ Nicholas added.

Reports had claimed Wenger wasn’t interested in signing new players in the January window so he can focus on Ozil and Sanchez’s contract renewals but the boss is yet to convince the duo to sign new deals.

The money we would have gotten from the sale of Debuchy and Jenkinson would have gone a long way into helping us secure the futures of our star players but we can’t really fault the club on this occasion, we actually tried to ship out the duo but couldn’t just find the right club to take them.
