Football pundit Stan Collymore has urged Arsenal to consider replacing Arsene Wenger with Diego Simeone, via Tribal Football.
Wenger’s contract runs out at the end of the season and he is yet to decide whether he will sign a new deal or not.
Arsenal have reportedly drawn up a four-man shortlist consisting of Monaco’s Leonardo Jardim, Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Tuchel, Newcastle’s Rafael Benitez and Barcelona’s Luis Enrique to replace Wenger if he steps down as boss this summer but Collymore believes Simeone will be the right man for the job.
Collymore believes Wenger’s time as manager should come to an end and thinks we shouldn’t look beyond Simeone to replace him.
“I’ve long said it should be Diego Simeone (who replaces Wenger), and I stand by that, although there are other big-name managers out there who would give them a lift,” Collymore wrote in his column for the Mirror, as quoted by Football Insider.
“I’ve long said Wenger’s Arsenal players are too nice, the type of lads you’d be delighted to introduce your daughter to.
“Simeone, though, would come in and bring a few rascals with him, the sort who’d do anything if it meant winning a big trophy, breathe life into the players left over from Wenger’s time, be combative with them and create a sort of band of brothers, which is what the Gunners need right now.”
I’m not sure of Collymore’s criteria of picking Simeone as Wenger’s ideal successor but I don’t think the Argentine will be the perfect replacement. Although he has established himself as one of Europe’s best managers after the success he enjoyed at Atletico, his style of play is the opposite of Arsenal’s.
The Argentine has built his side based on solid defensive display in contrast to our expansive style of play.
