Arsenal star Paul Merson has revealed Arsene Wenger’s failure to qualify the Gunners for the first time in 20 years will only mean the Frenchman will be under pressure to quit his job at the Emirates Stadium when his contract expires next month.
The Gunners are expected to spend big this summer to strengthen the team whether or not the veteran Frenchman leaves the club. And Merson has identified the four key signings his old side need to make when the transfer window reopens.
He said: “Tactically it isn’t good enough, and they need to buy four or five players.
“I don’t think he [Wenger] would treat the Europa League with the respect [Jose] Mourinho has.
“Wenger won’t play his best team in that competition, not a chance, that doesn’t do anything for him. It’s just an opportunity to play the younger kids and play once a week in the Premier League.
“I think Cech has been great, world-class, but he’s coming towards the end, and they need a centre midfielder, a centre-forward and a centre-half.
“That’s your spine! If you’re needing that, it’s hard to get in this day and age.”
Reports have suggested Arsenal are interested in signing Southampton star Virgil Dijk as a possible reinforcement in defense
And also Alexandre Lacazette have been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates.
