After the new broke out by French publication L’Equipe, that Arsenal made a £87million move for Monaco star Kylian Mbappe, Wenger has moved quickly to distance himself from spending such huge figures.
The Frenchman is not known for spending big in transfer windows since breaking the club’s record fee for Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.
Instead, the 67-year-old insists fans should not get distracted by transfer fees, and wants to find more bargains like Rob Holding, who only cost £2.5 million when he left Bolton last summer.
When asked about how many signings he will make this summer, Wenger told BeIn Sports.
‘We cannot spend as much as many other clubs because some clubs have external resources that allow them to be basically unlimited.
‘We can spend money because we have managed the club well. Let’s not forget the amount of money spent is not a guarantee of success.
‘We have to be clear what we understand as a big signing. Is [Rob] Holding a big signing for you or not?
‘When you buy a player for £40m, everybody will have at the start a positive judgement. When you buy him for £2m, he can’t be good?
‘That means a big signing is not necessarily linked with the amount of money spent.’
