According to reports from the Sun, Arsenal have been given the green light in signing Paris Saint-Germain star Blaise Matuidi’s after renewed hope of a cut-price bid.
An oral agreement to extend his contract, which expires in June 2018, was reportedly made by PSG ex-director of football Patrick Kluivert and former sporting director Olivier Letang.
But their departure this summer and the appointment of Antero Henrique has brought talks to a standstill.
And Matuidi’s father Faria has made it clear the France midfielder will explore all options with just 12 months remaining on his current deal.
Matuidi will be free to negotiate with other clubs come January and United would be front of the queue to offer him a deal if that did happen, but they could also negotiate a knock-down fee this summer.
Speaking to Le Parisien, he said: “A few weeks ago, Blaise was more interested in staying at PSG.
“Now the situation is much more mixed. PSG, and in particular their new sporting director [Antero Henrique], have been slow to reveal their intentions.
“For that reason we’re listening attentively to the advances of other clubs.
“There’s a feeling, rightly or wrongly, that everything said [by PSG] in the past few months is now part of ancient history.”
Matuidi, 30, has made 292 competitive appearances for PSG since arriving at the Parc des Princes from St Etienne in 2011, putting him in seventh place on the club’s all-time list of appearance makers.
But in my own opinion, I doubt if this deal will pull through as Wenger’s policies of signing players above 30 still come into play.
