Over the last decade, part of the reason Arsene Wenger has failed to win major trophies is not the absence of quality in his side but the injury and length of absence of key players when it mattered most.

Germany international and Arsenal centre-back Shkodran Mustafi has picked up a muscular injury and he will be out for a while, this is according to report.

The tough-tackling defender was called up by Joachim Loew to represent Germany in their World Cup qualifiers and while starring against Azerbaijan, he sustained an injury just before the 36th minute.

Apparently, Mustafi was in pains when some of the medical personally of the German side helped him out of the pitch and this has come as a massive blow for not just Germany but Arsenal.

Speaking after the game,  Loew reckons that the 26-year-old could be out for a long period as the injury looked serious.

He told reporters: “I think Mustafi has a muscle tear. It looks a bit more serious.

“A hamstring injury to a muscle tear, we have to wait for the exact diagnosis, but he’ll probably be out for a long time.”

Mustafi was closed to leaving Arsenal in the summer and he was left out of the Gunners game against Leicester City and Liverpool but he has since returned to Arsene Wenger’s first team. Mustafi has formed and forged a formidable partnership with Laurent Koscielny at the heart of Arsenal’s defence.

Heading into the game against Watford, Arsenal already have some defensive woes with Laurent Koscielny yet battling an Achilles problem. The Gunners Captain missed the game against Brighton and he could not join up with the French squad for their own qualifiers.

Mertesacker will be likely given a starting berth along young English defender Rob Holding in defence.
