Arsene Wenger said he does not know why Chelsea allowed Carabao Cup hero Eddie Nketiah to leave the club, but was delighted to reap the benefits on Tuesday night.
The 18-year-old came off the bench against Norwich City and scored just 15 seconds later with his first touch, before heading in the winner in extra time.
Nketiah started his career in west London with Chelsea but was released in summer of 2015 over concerns he was too lightweight.
Arsenal took a chance on the youngster, and he repaid it with a superb cameo that sealed his side’s progress into the quarter-finals, and Wenger was delighted with his star turn – and Chelsea’s decision to let him go.
Speaking after the match, Arsenal manager said: ‘I don’t know why they decided to let him go. You see that more and more these days. Young people going from one club to another.
‘I know that he can score goals and he has character. He is not afraid. He can give and go, and once a player has that in his game, they have a chance.’
He echoed those sentiments when speaking to Sky Sports: ‘He has the flair to score, you have to be in the box and he has that.
‘It’s not a quality you can teach at that age. I liked as well the header he scored. He’s not tall, but he got very high and It shows his determination and shows the guys who want it.
