Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger has claimed that he is “confident” Mesut Ozil (€30.3m) will secure a new deal at the club.
Ozil’s current contract ends at the end of this campaign, and there have been talks that the star man could leave the Emirates Stadium for a reduced fee in January rather than Arsenal risking him losing on a free transfer next summer.
But, having seen him secure all three points with an amazing volley in Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle United this evening, Wenger feels that the German will remain at the club.
“It’s superb; he can deliver that. It’s important to him that he takes the risk to do what he did. Usually, he is a guy who, 99% of the time, in this position, he controls the ball and gives it to somebody else. So I’m pleased he took the gamble to finish, and I’m happy as well that he scored a crucial goal.
“I’m confident (that he will stay), yes, but what does that mean? I don’t know.” – Wenger told a journalist.
The midfielder has now netted three goals and provided for five assists in his 15 Premier League games this term.
