Jack Wilshere limped off with an ankle sprain during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg draw at Chelsea on Wednesday night, and is a doubt for this weekend’s trip to Bournemouth.
The 26-year-old was handed the captain’s armband at Stamford Bridge – which ended in a goalless stalemate – but after he went to ground holding his right ankle, the England international grimaced at the thought of another injury lay-off.
Wilshere, who returned from a fractured leg in August suffered while on loan at Eddie Howe’s Cherries, attempted to carry on after receiving treatment on the edge of the Blues penalty area but was forced off with little-over half-an-hour to go.
‘It is an ankle sprain,’ manager Arsene Wenger said after the draw. ‘How long will he be out? I don’t know but it is definitely an ankle injury.
‘At the moment we have five big injuries and hopefully we will have some back. I think the earliest to come back is (Aaron) Ramsey and that is quite welcome because that is an area where we are quite short at the moment.
‘If we didn’t lose Jack tonight, then we would have quite the number but now we could look a bit short.’
