Arsenal have been handed a boost in their pursuit of West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans, with the Baggies close to the loan signing of Ali Gabr from Zamalek.
The Egyptian international defender is a potential replacement for Evans at the Hawthorns, with the Northern Irishman a reported January target for both Arsenal and Manchester City.
West Brom captain Evans is widely expected to leave before the transfer window shuts, with Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola renewing their battle to sign him.
The 30-year-old has 18 months remaining on his contract, but it is thought he is not open to signing an extension.
According to The Mirror, there is a clause in Evans’ contract that means he can leave for £3 million if Alan Pardew’s side are relegated from the Premier League.
And with the Baggies currently 19th in the table, there is a real possibility that they could choose to cash in this month, with West Brom valuing the defender at around £23 million.
With the uncertainty surrounding Evans, West Brom have moved to sign Gabr, who will reportedly join on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent switch.
