The winter transfer window witnessed lots of permanent deals and loan moves. Some moves where shocking while some are expected, but one thing that surprised many fans was the tactics used by Arsene Wenger to ensure that Mesut Ozil stays in the club by penning a new contract which will reportedly earn him £350,000 before tax on weekly basis.
The German playmaker was linked with numerous clubs including clubs in the Chinese Super League, but none of them could sign the veteran midfielder.
Manchester United manager José Mourinho who also failed to sign the player in the just concluded transfer market has revealed the reason why he couldn’t sign Ozil. According to the Portuguese manager, there is no need for more attack-minded players in his squad since he has gotten Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez.
“I think in attack it’s very difficult for us to improve. Where are we going to get a better combination of players than we have?” he asked.
He further said that the team already has enough strikers who can create chances and score fantastic goals.
The impressive display by Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard in recent weeks also played major impact in Mourinho’s failure to get Ozil. The two players seem to be back to their best form and the Portuguese believes they could offer what the German playmaker would offer should he move to the theater of dreams.
Ozil, 29, was also linked with a move back to Santiago Bernabeu and Barcelona, but he seems happy with the transactions made by Arsene Wenger and he wants to stay with the Gunners for another three years.
Though Arsenal are yet to officially declare that the 29-year-old has extended his contract, it is believed that he will become the Gunners highest paid player once he signs the contract extension.
