Arsenal are interested in signing Juventus and Italy defender Daniele Rugani, according to the player’s agent.
Arsene Wenger admitted last week that he was disappointed not to bolster his defensive options in January, having seen a £12m bid rejected for Jonny Evans on deadline day.
Arsenal have conceded 35 goals this season – more than any other club in the top eight – and are expected to target a number of defenders this summer.
Rugani, 23, has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Emirates, having impressed for Juventus since breaking into the first-team in 2013.
The player’s agent, Davide Torchia, says Arsenal did not launch a January move for his client, but confirmed there was interest from the Gunners.
‘Daniele’s doing well, I’m happy for him,’ he told Radio Sportiva. ‘Arsenal? They didn’t launch any assaults for him.
‘They expressed a liking for him, but we have respect for Juventus.’
Speaking for the first time since the January transfer window closed, Wenger admitted he will be forced to ‘adapt’ after Arsenal failed to sign a top defender.
‘Our defensive numbers aren’t good enough,’ the Arsenal manager said on Friday. ‘We needed strengthening because we have to improve our defensive numbers to make the top four.’
