The big question frequently asked is who will replace Arsene Wenger when he leaves Arsenal at the end of his contract.

The Frenchman recently signed a two year contract extension and is currently the longest serving manager in the Premier League.

It’s understood the north London club are seriously considering sacking Wenger following a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

Parlour, who made 466 appearances for Arsenal from 1992 to 2004, is confident that former captain Vieira would be a success at the Emirates. Speaking on Sky Sports, Parlour claimed: ‘The club need a plan behind the scenes now.

‘They may decide to go with an inexperienced person like Patrick Vieira or Thierry Henry.

‘Or do we want to go with someone who has Champions League experience like Diego Simeone? ‘

Obviously then there’s Carlo Ancelotti, who has managed some of the biggest clubs in the world. ‘But the one I would take a gamble on, and I think he’d be given time, is Patrick Vieira.

‘He’s managed in New York. He knows the club very well and he knows the history of the club.

‘I think he could attract big players and I think the fans would give him a chance as well.’

Vieira, currently head coach of New York City, was given his first taste of coaching with Manchester City’s reserves.

Emmanuel Petit previously launched a scathing attack on Wenger for a reluctance to appoint Arsenal legends in coaching roles.

‘I was with Patrick [Vieira] two days before he went to the USA. There was an event organised by Manchester City in January, and I was one of four players invited by Patrick,’ he told SFR Sport in 2016. ‘I spoke with Patrick for two hours and I can say – and maybe he will not be happy that I am saying this in public – he is really sickened by Arsenal and Arsene’s attitude. ‘Why didn’t Arsene open the door to Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Vieira or Tony Adams?
