Jack Wilshere will extend his contract at Arsenal – but he will hold back the progression of the Gunners’ team.
That is the verdict of ESPN FC pundit and ex-Scotland and Liverpool star Steve Nicol.
Wilshere is out of contract at Arsenal at the end of the season.
Manager Arsene Wenger says it is now Wilshere’s decision if he wants to sign an extension.
The England midfielder has been offered a pay cut at the Emirates with added incentives due to his atrocious injury record.
Nicol says Wilshere has a long-term future at Arsenal but does not necessarily think that is good news for the supporters.
“It would seem so (has a long-term future at Arsenal),” Nicol said.
“We’ve been talking about this guy leaving for the last 18 months and in fact he did, he went on loan to Bournemouth and had an absolute disaster.
“He’s come back to Arsenal, had a couple of good games and all of a sudden everybody’s saying he’s the saviour.
“So because of that I’m going to say he’s staying.
“In my opinion though, Arsenal are not progressing if Jack Wilshere is a mainstay in their starting XI. But he is staying.”
Wilshere has been a regular in the Arsenal side since December, with the Gunners languishing in sixth place in the Premier League table.
