Martin Keown says Arsenal were like street fighters in their 2-0 win over AC Milan at the San Siro on Thursday.

The Gunners went into the Europa League last-16 clash as the underdogs against the Italians, who were unbeaten in their last 13.

Arsenal on the other hand had lost their last four ahead of the contest, but took the match to Milan and came away with something to show for it.

Heaping praise on Arsenal’s performance, former Gunners centre-back Keown told BT Sport: “They picked themselves off the canvas, there is no doubt about that.

“They were in somewhat of a hole coming into this, everyone talking about not if but when Arsene Wenger was going to walk away from his job and this is the first step back.

“They were competitive, like street fighters, more at boiling point. It was almost as if people were able to walk all over them but not tonight, and that’s the very first step.”

Keown added: “It seems now that Wenger has found somewhere to play Ozil when defensively it’s not so much of a problem because I think Jack Wilshere will play centrally, but Jack is an exceptional talent. We’ve seen him play in that position.

“They grew tonight as a team, good performances all round and the central defenders were nice and soild.

“It was as good of a performance for a long time and they have got to build on that now. It’s the first step of baby steps to get back to where the club once was.

“This is a chance to win the Europa League and get into the Champions League. It’s a long way off but this is the first step.”
