Arsenal have been handed a massive boost as Barcelona have rejected the chance to sign Max Meyer, according to reports in Spain.
The 22-year-old Germany midfielder’s contract with Schalke expires at the end of the season and he has already twice rejected offers of fresh terms from the Bundesliga club.
It is unclear whether Schalke will make another offer before the summer, and Meyer has been widely tipped to move on at the end of the season, when he will be available for free.
Meyer is not short of potential suitors with both Arsenal and Liverpool leading the charge from the Premier League, while clubs from Italy and Spain also remain in the hunt.
However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have rejected the opportunity to rival offers for Meyer after brief discussions with the player’s representatives.
Barca are believed to have other options under consideration and have ruled out pursuing Meyer at the end of the season.
The news will come as a boost to both Arsenal and Liverpool, who are set to battle it out for the German’s signature.
