Celtic’s majority shareholder, Dermot Desmond, says the Scottish champions will not stand in Brendan Rodgers’ way if Arsenal want to speak to him as the Gunners look for a replacement for the outgoing Arsene Wenger.

Rodgers has been installed as the bookmakers favourite to take over from Wenger at the Emirates and speaking to Sky Sports, Desmond said that the club will allow their manager to speak to the Gunners if an approach is made.

He said:

“I’m glad he’s the favourite. He’s an outstanding person. We wouldn’t want him to leave but we won’t force him to stay. Hopefully his love for the club and the setup here will induce him to stay at the club.”

When he was directly asked if the club would allow Arsenal to speak to the ex-Liverpool manager, Desmond said:

“Absolutely. I don’t think you can put handcuffs on anybody if they want to go to a club as good as Arsenal. It will be Brendan’s decision and his decision only.”

Wenger will continue to manage Arsenal until the end of the season, where he will bring to an end his 22 year run as the club’s manager.
