Arsene Wenger says his successor watched Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

The Gunners conceded an added time header by Marouane Fellaini to give Jose Mourinho’s side the bragging rights in Wenger’s final game at Old Trafford.

With Thursday’s clash Atletico Madrid in mind, the Frenchman made vast changes to his side. And while the Gunners have been criticised for their frailties, a number of fringe players impressed at the Theatre of Dreams.

Youngsters such as Reiss Nelson, Ainsley-Maitland Niles and Kostas Mavropanos all showed glimpses of potential.

And Wenger believes his successor will be looking at those players to be part of the future of Arsenal football club.

Speaking after the defeat at Old Trafford, the Frenchman spoke of the depth in his current squad.

Wenger said: “My successor certainly will have watched this game today.

“Hopefully, he will come to positive conclusions for the players.

“For them, it’s whether they can be part of the future of Arsenal Football Club.

“I think some of them have shown today that they can be, 100 per cent. I would say, personally, 100 per cent.”

Ex-Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is favourite to replace Wenger, but former players Patrick Vieira and Mkiel Arteta are also linked with the Arsenal job.
