Martin Keown has torn Mesut Ozil to shreds after his performance against Atletico Madrid last night, claiming he is not fit to wear the shirt.
Arsenal crashed out of the Europa League last night at the hands of Atletico after succumbing to a 1-0 loss at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Diego Costa’s first-half strike meant the game finished 2-1 on aggregate, ending any chance of Arsene Wenger leaving the club with a final piece of silverware.
And Arsenal legend Keown has dug out German playmaker Ozil for an anonymous display against the Spanish side.
There have been several criticisms levelled at the former Real Madrid midfielder in the past over his performances in big games, and Keown was keen to emphasise that.
He said after the game last night: “It’s almost like his hands are in the air [saying] ‘Look this group aren’t as good as me’.
“Someone needed to grab him a long time ago, to give him a shack and say we’re trying to get the ball to you. We are working for you but you’re not working for us.”
Keown went on to suggest that Ozil will make himself unavailable for selection for the rest of the season.
He added: “I bet he doesn’t play again this season. He’ll have some emotional breakdown and won’t play this weekend.
“I don’t know how many illnesses he has had this [season]. That is not a proper performance.
“He’s not giving everything and there’s much more under the bonnet.
“He wasn’t fit to wear the shirt tonight. I’ve seen this a lot this season. It needs to be said. He needs to be dug out. We expect better from him.
“These are crocodile tears I’m seeing from the player. He’s not conning me.”
