Mikel Arteta will need the support of Arsenal fans when he replaces Arsene Wenger, claims Guillem Balague.
The former Gunners captain looks set to takeover at the Emirates in the coming days after weeks of speculation surrounding the post.
Arteta has been plying his trade at Manchester City, assisting Pep Guardiola since 2016.
The 36-year-old’s obvious lack of managerial experience is bound to rile some Arsenal fans, who expected the likes of Carlo Ancelotti or Luis Enrique to be appointed.
And Balague admits the Gunners faithful must support Arteta upon his arrival in north London.
“What he will need is the support of the fans and to get that he will have to explain to them the process of what he is going to try to achieve,” he told Sky Sports.
“Above all, he will need that rarest and most precious commodity afforded to football coaches – time.
“The process will be all about exploiting all the possibilities available to him while simultaneously changing many of them.
“In truth, some of the Arsenal players are far too comfortable in their role at the club.
“Comfortable in defeat, comfortable in showing a lack of challenge.
He will know that better than anyone and that it is something that will have to be addressed.”
Arteta is set to appoint a high-calibre backroom team to help him through his first stint as a senior manager.
Santi Cazorla and Thierry Henry have been linked with coaching roles at Arsenal this week.
