Arsenal are on the brink of signing Greek and Borrussia Dortmund Sokratis Papastathopoulos after reports emerged that the German club are already on the search for his replacement, this is according report.
Arsenal are looking to reinforce their leaky defense as they aim to bring back the glory days of yesteryear – the Gunners defense conceded goals with reckless abandon and they are looking to overhaul the centre-back position.
Papastathopoulos emerged as a prime target for Arsenal this season after he refused to extend his contract with Dortmund. The sporting director of Borrussia Dortmund, Michael Zorc, confirmed the 29-year-old has knocked back offers from the club.
“Until now discussions haven’t left us with the impression there will be an extension,” Zorc told Ruhr Nachrichten.
Following Zorc’s statement, there is the general belief that Papastathopoulos has decided to join Arsenal and it is only a matter of time before he’d be confirmed as a Gunner.
The Greek defender is widely expected to put pen to paper on a two-year with Arsenal, and €20m will be enough to get the deal done, reports Bild.
The report went further to claim Dortmund are looking to recoup funds from the sale of players in order to reinforce their squad and the Arsenal target would be allowed to leave.
Laurent Koscielny will not be back in action until December and Per Mertesacker has been handed a position in the back room of the club after he decided to hang his boots – this has left the Gunners defense threadbare, leaving them with no choice than to sign reinforcements.
