Arsenal have reached a £16 million agreement with Borussia Dortmund for the signing of their prime target Sokratis Papastathopoulos, this is according to emerging reports.
From the opening of the transfer window, Sokratis has been top on the Gunners transfer radar but he will join Stephan Lichtsteiner as another new signing in the era of Unai Emery.
Arsenal conceded goals with reckless abandon last term and they are poised to reinforce their leaky defense despite having a meager transfer budget. Laurent Koscielny is out injured until the second half of next season and Per Mertesacker has moved to the back room of the Gunners, leaving Arsenal with no choice than to sign centre-backs.
Sokratis has a year left on his current contract with Dortmund but he had knocked back offers made for him by the club. His breakthrough in Dortmund came when Matt Hummels joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2016.
The 29-year old is expected to slot into the Gunners first team. While an agreement is already in place for the move, the Telegraph reports that Arsenal the official confirmation of the deal will be done next month.
He is expected to put pen to paper on a three-year deal and will be the third player lured to the Emirates by the Gunners head of recruitment Sven Mislintat after Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Emery is not expected to sign defenders, we expect to see a top-notch midfielder at the club too.
