Arsenal are set to make a move for Sampdoria’s Lucas Torreira as new boss Unai Emery continues to look for defensive-minded reinforcements.

Torreira, 22, would join free signing Stephan Lichtsteiner as part of a number of summer targets designed to solidify the Spaniard’s new side.

According to Di Marzio, Torreira is fond of Arsenal and could be secured if the Gunners meet the £22million buyout clause in his contract.

Napoli are also said to be in talks with the Uruguayan, who joined Sampdoria from Pescara in 2015 and would challenge Granit Xhaka for a place in the starting lineup.

Xhaka’s performances have been largely inconsistent since his £35million move from Borussia Monchengladbach two years ago, but he remained a favourite under Arsene Wenger, playing in all 38 Premier League games last season.

Torreira is yet another defensive player to be linked with the Gunners since Emery’s arrival.

Alongside new signing Lichtsteiner, the club have reportedly made moves for centre-backs Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Medhi Benatia, as well as RB Leipzig right-back Lukas Klostermann.

Emery’s focus appears to be motivated by uncertainty over current options, with Per Mertesacker retiring and mainstay Laurent Koscielny out for the long term with an achilles injury.

Shkodran Mustafi and Calum Chambers may be shown the door this summer, while young prospects Rob Holding and Konstantinos Mavropanos still lack experience.

Central midfield also seems to be an area of concern, with Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic being linked as the futures of Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere still hang in the balance.
