Arsenal winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan is reportedly nearing a move to AS Roma on loan.

Sky in Italy say the Armenia international is due to travel to Rome on Monday morning to finalise a deal, with adding youngster Gabriel Martinelli will take his place in the Arsenal first-team.

Mkhitaryan has really struggled for the north Londoners since arriving in January 2018 as part of a swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez move to Manchester United.

The 30-year-old has shown flashes of his ability but has often struggled to show consistency and tends to frustrate with his end product.

It has been an underwhelming start to the new campaign for the ex-Borussia Dortmund star, and Arsenal appear happy to let him leave on a temporary basis for him to try and get back to his best.

This is probably the right move by Arsenal – Mkhitaryan simply hasn’t shown enough during his time at the club and really needs a change of environment.

Perhaps the Italian league would suit Mkhitaryan better, and he can somehow return to being the player he was a few years ago in Germany.

In an ideal world for Arsenal he will, and the club can then move him on permanently in the summer of 2020 and free up some wages.
