Arsenal were linked with a move for Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti during the summer.
Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti has insisted that he never came close to a move to Arsenal during the summer transfer window.
The centre-back had been heavily linked with a move away from the Spanish champions during the summer.
He had been touted as the answer to Arsenal’s centre-back issues, with Unai Emery struggling to find the right back four with the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Laurent Koscielny, before his move to France.
But in the end, Arsenal chose to sign Chelsea defender David Luiz for a small fee of £8million.
And speaking to Canal Football Club, Umtiti insisted that he was never really close to joining the Gunners.
“Honestly, I don’t know where this rumour with Arsenal came from,” he said.
“Overnight, I received messages from my friends ‘ah, so you are joining Arsenal?’ I’m not, I’m sorry but I’m staying at Barcelona.
“Contacts with Arsenal? To be honest, I don’t know if they had conversations with my agent, I just told him that I didn’t care what was happening this summer and that it wasn’t even necessary to talk to me about it.
“It was useless, I was going to have the same answer.
“My dream as a child is to play for Barcelona. Last season was the most difficult of my career, especially in terms of injuries.”
Umtiti had also been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain as part of an exchange for Neymar.
The Brazilian forward was desperate to leave PSG this summer, and was close to returning to Barca.
In the start of the summer, it was reported that Barca would be willing to offer Umtiti to the French champions along with Ousmane Dembele and a large sum of cash.
But Umtiti went on to claim that he knew nothing of a potential swap deal.
“Exchange coin for Neymar? It’s crazy,” he continued.
“It made me laugh, I don’t even have an answer to where it comes from.”
